Hello, friends, 👋 It’s July and we just wrapped up Q2 and it’s time to review it all.
I will be also sharing some organisations to check out if you're interested in tech & start-up!
Again, the purpose of this series is really for me to soak in the past few months. It’s for my own well-being and self-reflection.
April
Started the month doing a lot of reflection and re-planning for 2019. Also, reconnecting with the community and catching up with friends.
As everyone knows, I left my full-time job back in March. It naturally ended and I had no more interest in carrying on working in government (for now).
The CGV team attended AfroTechFest.
AfroTech Fest is a tech festival by and for Black people of African and Caribbean heritage. AfroTech Fest is back in 2021. If you missed any of talks you can catch it all over on their Youtube Channel.
Community Growth Venture (CGV) is an Angel Syndicate Group based in the UK. CGV invests time, capitals and resources to help passionate founders from minority and underestimated backgrounds create sustainable companies that deliver value to customers and the communities they operate in.
I co-hosted a workshop at AfroTech Fest with African Gist team. For those who missed it, I have written up notes from my workshop at AfroTech Fest via the List of Tech groups who cater or specifically includes African or Caribbean descent post.
Africa Gist provides the support to African youths growing their skills & business using digital tools based.

Productive month. Went conferencing with the Backed VC (my extended family), worked hard in the CGV office, helped the start-up ecosystem.
At CGV, we hosted our 2nd office hours with Episode 1.
Episode1 Ventures is a venture capital fund set up to invest in early-stage technology companies based in London, UK. The aim of our office hours is to connect amazing underrepresented founders to the VC world. We are planning our CGV Office Hours in Q3 / Q4 so please stay tuned !
Additional, previously in my last post I mentioned I officially joined the Backed VC scout family. I was given the opportunity this month to travel to Estonia and attend and represent Backed VC at Latitude59.

Latitude59 is a startup and tech event in Estonia. In summary, I had an amazing time in Tallinn and meet so many amazing founders doing some disruptive businesses, meet so many investors across the Europe and enjoyed the well organised Latitude59 conference.
Backed is a community-driven seed stage VC fund, based in London.
Was invited by Young Enterprise Tenner Challenge to judge and award students for starting & running their enterprise from only £10 funding.
Young Enterprise Tenner Challenge helps students to gain confidence and prepare for the world of work. In the tenner challenge students are pledged £10 from the Tenner Bank and use this start-up capital to get their enterprise off the ground. They have one month to set up their business, coming up with an idea for a product or service. Was highlighted in Code First: Girls list of 25 women under 30 doing impressive work in tech & entrepreneurship.
Code First: Girls works with companies and with men and women directly, to help increase the number of women in tech. Their main mission is to teach 20,000 women to code by the end of 2020. Such a fantastic program and I’m also an instructor and help teach their free & professional beginner course which covers HTML, CSS and JS since 2018.
June
Lastly we arrive in June, and we are having fun attending London Tech Week events and generally started to wind down because the sun is finally out (- ish)!
Pre-London Tech Week, I attended Startup Grind.
Startup Grind is a global startup community designed to educate, inspire, and connect entrepreneurs. I generally didn’t sit down and listen to talks / panels this year which is a shame. Honestly, I only attend big conference these days only to catch-up with people I know in the ecosystem.
Cog X was bigger this year around, really enjoyed the Women in AI breakfast.
CogX is the festival of AI and Emerging Technology. In 2019, the festival brought together over 15000 attendees and 500 speakers across 12 main stages.
Loved the accelerate HER forum held at Google. Unfortunately, I didn’t personally tweet on the day, I was too busy really enjoying and fully listening to all the amazing speakers throughout the day.
accelerate HER was born out of Founders Forum in June 2016 when we decided to stop talking about the underrepresentation of women in tech and DO something about it. Their mission is to champion and support women working in technology and to break down the barriers that deter women from entering the sector.
I also shared my Tech journey with Elpha.
Elpha is where women in tech to talk candidly online. They are a private community where members come for personal and professional development
Additionally, shared my angel experience and CGV journey with Sifted backed by FT.
Sifted is a new media site for Europe’s innovators and entrepreneurs. Sifted is bringing a distinctive European voice to the global tech debate via their website and newsletter.
Lastly, caught up with some amazing individual in the start-up ecosystem hosted by Jenny from TechHub.
TechHub is the global community for tech entrepreneurs and startups. They support the growth of over 750 companies across the world, whether they’re founders getting started, or fast-scaling 50 to 100-person teams.
